  • Part 115 – Another Wednesday

Today is Wednesday, and Mom is helping me get my post done on time. My last post was about the progress Dad is making with his health. Yesterday he made even more progress with standing and balancing without his walker. After his finished his therapy and had another Diet Coke, Mom came back to ask if he wanted to go take a nap. He didn’t answer her. She called 911. He was taken to the Bonham ER with another urinary track infection. I now hate the letters UTI. She stayed with him all afternoon through his tests and finally the start of the antibiotics. Once he was sleeping peacefully and on his way to his room for the next few days, she came back home to tell us what was happening. I was happy to let Miko sit on her lap and purr. She needed that comfortable sound. I took my turn later by putting my front paws on her shoulder as I rubbed noses with her. My purr isn’t very loud, but I think I offered her some comfort. I know all of this hospital stuff is hard on Dad, but it is also hard on Mom in many different ways.

Mom had planned to bake the turkey yesterday. It will stay in the refrigerator for a bit longer. Maybe we will get to eat turkey for dinner tomorrow night. I hope Dad is able to come home to join us.

  • Part 116 – Another Hospital

Mom got a call from the hospital last night. They were transferring Dad to a hospital closer to Dallas. He went late last night, and Mom learned this morning it was not easy for them or him. Mom said that he has gotten a little worse. They have started him on three different antibiotics. I really hope this works so he can come home. Mom says he will not be home for Christmas. I know this new hospital is an even longer drive from Mom – 75 miles each way. I hope she makes her days shorter. We miss her as well as missing Dad. Wish I could cross my paws the way people do their fingers for good luck. I think Dad needs it right now.

  • Part 117 – December 25th

Mom explained that today is a special holiday for many different people. She said it is National Pumpkin Pie Day, Hanukkah, Christmas, and Zagreb Advent which I had never heard before. It sounds like it might be the most fun because the Internet says it is 1) magical and 2) lasts from November 30th to January 7th! It also says it is celebrated in Croatia’s capital which might be an issue. I’m sure snow is also involved. As a Texan born cat, I’m not too happy about that cold white stuff. Mom says it can be fun in short doses. I’ll take her word for it.

This is a hard day for Mom. Dad is not doing well in the hospital. He has been moved from one section to another. Yesterday he was placed in the dementia ICU ward. On Monday, he was agitated and didn’t know Mom at all. Tuesday, he still didn’t know her, but liked kissing her. He was still refusing to eat or drink anything. Mom told me, as she cried last night, that she has a paper that Dad signed before all of these hospital visits. It tells her what he wants her to do for him. She is researching what she needs to do so that he can come home to be with us on his last days. We all miss him and will do what we can to help. I know that Mom loves him so much. I wish I had a paper that would tell me how to help her.

In the mean time, Mom gave me some cat nip as well as a catnip mice for both Miko and I. She can have mine. I’m really not into mice. Missy got a squeaky toy that I’m sure Miko will steal. That should keep her out of the Christmas tree and stop shredding the toilet paper. This is her version of a White Christmas!
